NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

Design In Time Opening December 7, 2013 at Heath Ceramics: San Francisco Factory & Showroom and LA Studio & Showroom. A show of one-of-a-kind clocks, made with friends and collaborators to celebrate 10 years of Heath design and making. Heath friends and collaborators share their interpretations of time, through shape and form, in one-of-a-kind clock designs for our final show of the year. It’s a celebration of ten years of design at Heath. Join us for opening receptions in our San Francisco and Los Angeles showrooms on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 5:30–8:30pm.

Remodelista Market December 14, 10am–5pm, at Heath San Francisco Factory & Showroom. Featuring more than 30 of Remodelista’s favorite local designers and specialty retailers featuring a range of considered goods for the home including textiles, ceramics, furniture and clothing. Come meet the Remodelista editors, grab a coffee at Blue Bottle and shop some of the best wares for the considered lifestyle.

Oola & Friends Help the Philippines December 8, 2013, 4–7pm, at LuLu Restaurant & Bar 816 Folsom Street, San Francisco. Join us in our fundraiser benefitting the victims of the typhoon: Artists for the Philippines, helping the victims of typhoon haiyanartists, restaurateurs, local business owners, wineries and all our friends are donating artwork, time, and prizes for the raffle. Proceeds from sales will go directly to Red Cross and to rebuild schools. Look forward to seeing all of you!

Jerry Takigawa: False Food November 9, 2013–January 19, 2014, Museum of Craft Design, San Francisco. This thought-provoking exhibition focuses on discovery, sustainability, action in design, and false food as a metaphor for survival. Presented in the form of fine art photography and text, which is significantly informed by the artist’s profession as a graphic designer, the exhibition asks visitors, “What does responsible design mean?” and “Can photographs be graphic design?”

Holidays at Velvet da Vinci December 1–December 31, 2013, at Velvet da Vinci, San Francisco. Join Velvet da Vinci for their 23rd annual holiday celebration, with special installations by Hilary Pfeifer & Tom Hill. Holiday reception: Sunday, December 1, 11am–6pm.

Vessel 9.5: Vessel as the Human Form, Humanity November 1–December 14, Vessel Gallery, 471 25th Street, Oakland. Vessel Gallery commemorates 9.5 years with artworks by Bill Abright, Pamela Merory Dernham, Scott Dupree, Gordon Glasgow, Thekla Hammond, Walter James Mansfield, Iris Polos, Cyrus Tilton, Wayne Shaffer, Sanjay Vora, and Allyce Wood. A percentage of sales from Vessel 9.5 will be donated in support of two non-profit Oakland youth arts education programs Destiny Arts and Oaktown Jazz Workshop.

Renegade Craft Fair Winter Market December 21–22, 2013 at the Concourse Exhibition Center, San Francisco. We’ll be wrapping up a great year of craft fairs with the 5th Annual Renegade Craft Fair Winter Market in San Francisco. Join us for a curated collection of today’s brightest + best indie makers from the Bay Area and beyond.

New West Coast Design 2 October 26,2013–January 2013, at the Museum of Craft Design, San Francisco. Where are the incubators for the designers of our decade? Which of their works will become icons treasured by the next generation? Inspired by our initial 2008 exhibition which highlighted experimental works by artists in California, Oregon and Washington, NWCD2 features over 70 artists chosen for the significant contribution they make to the world of design by expanding on the idea of function, exploiting materials, innovative techniques, or pioneering applications of new technology. From skateboards to furniture, toy houses, and lighting fixtures, NWCD2 focuses on the design process itself and how this impulse is manifested by architects, industrial designers, interior designers, studio craft artists and design groups working with advanced digital technologies. 

David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition October 26–January 20, 2013, the deYoung Museum, San Francisco. David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition (October 26, 2013-January 20, 2014) marks the return of the celebrated British artist to California with an exhibition assembled exclusively for the de Young. Expansive in scope and monumental in scale, this show is the first comprehensive survey of his 21st century work and represents one of the most prolific decades of his career. Renowned for his use of traditional media as well as evolving technologies, Hockney has selected monumental paintings, Photoshop portraits, digital films that track the changing seasons, vivid landscapes created using the iPad, as well as never-before-exhibited charcoal drawings and paintings completed in 2013. 

The Art of Bulgari: La Dolce Vita & Beyond 1950–1990 September 21,2013–February 17,2014, The deYoung Museum, San Francisco. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are pleased to announce The Art of Bulgari: La Dolce Vita & Beyond 1950–1990, an exhibition of approximately 150 pieces created by the renowned Italian jeweler over four decades. This exclusive exhibition will highlight jewelry that defined a pivotal period in Italian design, and will include many pieces from the personal collection of Elizabeth Taylor.  

 

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

A Current Affair: Pop Up Vintage Marketplace Holiday 2013 December 7, 2013, at Cooper Design Space, Los Angeles. Current Affair is a source for stylists, fashion designers, celebrities, and anyone in search of one of a kind vintage ranging from perfectly worn in jeans to rare and collectible designer vintage. Bringing together over 50 premier vintage retailers and private dealers, the holiday show will feature an exclusive Gift Market curated by Joanna Williams of Kneeland Mercado. Sip from an open bar sponsored by Peroni, enjoy lite bites from Cake Box Vintage catering, and shop to music provided by KCRW DJ Marion Hodges. A portion of the door proceeds will benefit The Art of Elysium, a non-profit dedicated to enriching the lives of artists and critically ill children.

Artifacts of A Life Lived By the Living (To Live) September 29, 2013–January 5, 2014, at Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles. Curated by artist Chris Johanson, this exhibition celebrates the meditative ritual and necessity of the creative process. The interdisciplinary exhibition brings together a group of artists who feel that they must create in service of bringing order to their lives. Johanson has assembled a group of artists he has admired whose work includes drawing, painting, installation, sound, performance and movement.

Nathalie Miebach: Changing Waters September 29,2013–January 5, 2014, at Craft & Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles. The first solo museum exhibition in Los Angeles of TED Global Fellow Nathalie Miebach, who translates scientific data related to weather patterns and climate change into musical scores and complex woven sculptures. Her large-scale sculptures and wall pieces draw upon traditional basket weaving techniques and weather pattern data collected from the Gulf of Maine.

Renegade Craft Fair Winter Market December 14–15, 2013 from 10am–5pm each day at the Los Angeles State Historic Park and check out the curated collection of today’s best and brightest indie makers from LA and beyond. As always, the weekend will be packed with extra fun and surprises.

 

PACIFIC NORTHWEST

The Tool at Hand October 2, 2013–January 11, 2014, at the MoCC, Portland, OR. The Tool at Hand presents these finished works and the tools used to craft them together with short videos produced by each artist. For a group of artists who are accustomed to working with considerable tool kits in a range of materials including metal, wood, paint, clay, as well as with non-traditional tools such as dental drills and 3D printers, this commission presented a thought-provoking challenge.

Quality is Contagious, John Economaki and Bridge City Tool Works August 16, 2013–February 8 2014, at the MoCC, Portland, OR. Drawing on his background in industrial design and knowledge of construction needs, John Economaki established Bridge City Tool Works in 1983. Using the most contemporary digital technology, Economaki designs tools to stand the test of time. The company’s products, sketches, and tools from the past thirty years will be on view for the first time. 

 

ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGION

Craft Tech / Coded Media: Women, Art and Technology October 3–January 26, 2014, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Bolder, CO. Examines the role of gender in technology through the lens of contemporary women artists. In the twenty-first century as digital media increasingly permeates every level of our lives, what is the relationship between gender and technology? Is our period one of utopian embrace of social networks, enabled by technology? What is the relationship of the body to technology? This exhibition continues an examination of gendered frameworks for technology and art in the 21st century, and will include art by women who engage in and ultimately challenge the uncritical celebration of utopian claims for benevolent globalized technologies.

 

MIDWEST

Renegade Craft Fair Winter Market December 7–8, 2013 at the Pulaski Park Fieldhouse, Chicago. Join us for a curated collection of today’s brightest and best indie makers in one of the coziest venues you’ll find. We’ll be bringing winter cheer to our hometown with the 8th Annual Renegade Craft Fair Winter Market in Chicago.

 

EAST COAST

Renegade Craft Fair Brooklyn Winter November 23–24, 2013, Skylight One Hanson, Brooklyn, NY. We’ll have a cozy and festive fair in Brooklyn with the 2nd Annual Renegade Craft Fair Winter Market on November 23 and 24, 2013. The historical Skylight One Hanson couldn’t be a better venue to showcase the wares of today’s best and brightest indie makers from the Empire State and beyond. As always, the weekend will have all kinds of extra fun planned.

“Isa Genzken: Retrospective” November 23–December 21, 2013, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY. Isa Genzken (German, b. 1948) is arguably one of the most important and influential female artists of the past 30 years. This exhibition, the first comprehensive retrospective of her diverse body of work in an American museum, and the largest to date, encompasses Genzken’s work in all mediums over the past 40 years. Although a New York art audience might be familiar with Genzken’s more recent assemblage sculptures, the breadth of her achievement—which includes not only three-dimensional work but also paintings, photographs, collages, drawings, artist’s books, films, and public sculptures—is still largely unknown in this country.

Interwoven Globe: The Worldwide Textile Trade September 16, 2013–January 5, 2014, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY. This exhibition that will look at fabric design from a global perspective and attempt to tell a story of international global trade through three centuries of fabric.

Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk October 25, 2013–February 23, 2013, Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY. The Brooklyn Museum is the only East Coast venue for The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, the first international exhibition dedicated to the groundbreaking French couturier. Playful, poetic, and transformative, Gaultier’s superbly crafted and detailed garments are inspired by the beauty and diversity of global cultures.

Flea Marqueta, Sundays, 12–6pm, 116th & Park Avenue, New York, NY. In its heyday, hundreds of pushcart merchants and vendors sold and traded at La Marqueta, making it the community’s economic and social center. The once-bustling marketplace is now home to Flea Marqueta, which will feature dozens of stalls for East Harlem retailers, artists, and craftsman in the space under the Metro North tracks at E. 116th St.

 

SOUTHEAST 

Design Miami December 4–8, 2013. Preview Day December 3, at Meridian Avenue & 19th Street, Adjacent to the Miami Beach Convention Centre, Miami Beach, FL. Design Miami is the global forum for design. Each fair brings together the most influential collectors, gallerists, designers, curators and critics from around the world in celebration of design culture and commerce. Hello, My Name Is Paul Smith November 15–March 9, 2014, The Design Museum, London. The Design Museum takes you into the world of fashion designer Paul Smith, a world of creation, inspiration, collaboration, wit and beauty. Celebrating his career to date and exploring future developments, the exhibition references Paul Smith’s influences and fashion designs, charting the rise of this quintessentially English label which has become one of the leading fashion brands in the world.
