New West Coast Design 2 October 26,2013–January 2013, Museum of Craft Design, San Francisco, CA. Where are the incubators for the designers of our decade? From skateboards to furniture, toy houses, and lighting fixtures, NWCD2 focuses on the design process itself and how this impulse is manifested by architects, industrial designers, interior designers, studio craft artists and design groups working with advanced digital technologies.
Amy Weiks: Sift, Sort + Strain November 1–27, 2013, Velvet da Vinci Gallery, San Francisco, CA. Sift, Sort + Strain reflects both the potential utility of the objects within the installation as well as the processes by which those objects came to be. As humans we are designed to absorb tactile, visual, and aural information. Our minds process this information by sifting it through neural filters, sorting it into relevant and irrelevant categories, and straining out only the most pertinent input to digest, ponder, or respond to. These actions help us to meet the world; without them we would be overwhelmed by the deluge the sensory input we encounter. The objects in Sift, Sort + Strain attempt to capture the intangible and opaque processes of the mind, while also referencing the utilitarian practicality of the everyday.
