What to do June 2013

Summer is a time for relaxation and rejuvenation. But not all of us can take that tropical vacation we want oh so badly. So instead why not take a break and escape to some fabulous art and design events–here are some of our favorites!

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

HABITATS May 23-July 7, 2013, at Campfire Gallery, 3344 24th St, SF. New mixed-media works by Robert Larson. Creating work from discarded consumer materials, Larson brings a second life to materials otherwise seen as trash. Artist Reception: June 1, 6-9 pm.

One. Two. June 8-July 28, 2013, at Shibumi Gallery, 1402 Fifth St, Berkeley. A solo exhibition by San Franciscan artist, Niki Ulehla, featuring jewelry made of hand-painted silk, gilded plastics and pearls. Artist Reception: June 8, 5-8 pm.

Magic City June 12-July 14, 2013, at Velvet Da Vinci Gallery, 2015 Polk Street, SF. An exhibition of current work from recent graduates and established artists from the School of Jewellery, Birmingham. Flourishing despite the recent global downturns, jewelers coming out of Birmingham have shown a resourcefulness and resilience in the making and presentation of their work.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Dwell on Design June 21-23, 2013, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. As America’s largest modern design event, Dwell on Design transforms 200, 000 square feet of concrete into a design incubator where prefab comes to life design luminaries debate the issues of today.

Join us at 100% California, a showcase bringing together some of the most talented people who design and create in California—people who are defining the future through their designs and through the quality and craftsmanship of their work. And this isn’t just an exhibit: You’ll be able to purchase the items you see there, or put in special orders so you can take home a little 100% California style and make it your own!

CAFAM Granny Squared May 26-July 1, 2013, at Craft and Folk Art Museum, LA. Go check out the yarn bombing phenomenon, as the facade of the CAFAM is covered in 12, 000 crocheted granny squares by the knit graffiti collective, Yarn Bombing Los Angeles. This temporary public art display questions the boundaries between art and craft, using scale and color to play with artistic and architectural identities.

EAST COAST

Renegade Craft Fair Brooklyn June 22-23, 2013, at East River State Park, Brooklyn, NY. A well curated selection of over 300 indie crafters, with workshops by Bernina + Kollabora and Brooklyn Charm, DIY inspiration lounge by Toyota, and interactive chalkboard installation by Class Attire.

Bushwick Open Studios May 31-June 2, 2013. A three day arts and culture festival, hosted by Arts in Bushwick, that celebrates the community’s vibrant art scene.

American Crafts Festival June 8-9 and June 15-16, 2013, at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Come experience original and handcrafted designs, with hundreds of exhibitors from across the country.

EUROPE

UK

Summer Open Studios Holbern: June 7-9, 2013, at Cockpit Yard, Northington St, London. Deptford: June 14-16, 2013, at 18-22 Creekside, London. Come see original work by 165 independent designer-makers.  Sow the seeds of sustainability and buy beautifully crafted pieces you’ll want to keep for a lifetime.

Bud to Bloom May 4-July 7, 2013, at Forty Hall & Estate, London. Contemporary craft works inspired by the natural world and life cycle of plants. Works include delicate textiles, intricate sculptural objects and beautiful ceramics from leading UK makers and artists.

Sound Matters June 1-30, 2013, at The Iona Gallery, Kingussie. This exhibit considers the connections between craft practice and sound art. Seven contemporary works have been selected to illustrate ways in which these two distinct practices can collide.

SWITZERLAND

Design Miami/Basel June 11-16, 2013, in Basel, Switzerland. A global forum for design that brings together the most influential collectors, gallerists, designers, curators and critics from around the world in celebration of design culture and commerce.
