Spring has sprung and all we want to do is be out and about at the season’s most exciting art and design events. Here are a few of our top picks. See you there!

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

Museum of Craft and Design Grand Opening April 6, 2013, at 2569 Third Street, SF. Come join in the celebration of the new permanent home of the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco’s historic Dogpatch district with dynamic exhibitions from Arline Fisch, Michael Cooper and Rebecca Hutchinson.

TYPO San Francisco April 11-12, 2013, at Yuerba Buena Center for the Arts, SF. A two-day international conference with an emphasis on design, society, culture, TYPO San Francisco adapts one of Europe’s most successful design events with a Bay Area twist.

Vertigo: Morten Løbner Espersen April 19-June 22, 2013, at Hedge Gallery, 501 Pacific Avenue, SF. A show of 18 new works by Danish ceramic artist Morten Løbner Espersen, whose beautiful hand built cylinders explore provocative textures and coats that suggest volcanic eruptions. Exhibition opening: April 18, 5:30-7:30 pm.

Beyond Trend April 4-6, 2013, at Creative Growth, 355 24th Street, Oakland. A collaboration between local clothing and housewares designer Erica Tanov and the world’s largest non-profit center for artists with disabilities, Creative Growth. This three-day fundraising event is a cultural series celebrating the intersection of Bay Area art, music, food and fashion.

Seeing Orange: Dutch Design at CCAApril 8-12, 2013, at California College of the Arts, 1111 Eighth Street, SF. CCA hosts a series of lectures, workshops, receptions, and a panel discussion with Dutch designers based in the Bay Area focusing on the designers’ work and creative processes in the framework of the Dutch approach to design.

Peace Industry Grand Opening Party, April 17, 6-9 pm, 2235 Mission Street, SF. Celebrate the grand opening of brand new digs for reknown rug designers and purveyors, Peace Industry in the Mission. Come see their gorgeous collection, learn how it’s all made, and meet the artisans they’re collaborating with! RSVP required!

Asian Art Museum, Craft Warriors, April 18, 5-9, 200 Larkin Street, SF. An evening of art-making and craft, cranked up to the next level. Start by learning simple crafts as taught by four artists featured (or to be featured) on Handful of SaltEalish WilsonMegumi Inouye, Kathryn Kenworth and Emiko Oye. After learning each of the skills, visitors will be placed in a team directed by an artist. Serving as a workforce, visitors will construct building materials or units for a larger scale project conceived by the artist and inspired by the exhibition, China’s Terracotta Warriors. Come get crafty and hang out with the Handful of Salt gang!

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Good Enough to Eat: Food as a Medium for Craft April 20-June 22, 2013, at The Craft in America Study Center, LA. The last of a three-part series, this event will showcase art that is made of or incorporates edible substances. This show gives us the chance to look at what we eat from an entirely fresh perspective.

NORTHWEST

We Tell Ourselves Stories in order to Live Until April 27, 2013, at the Museum of Contemporary Craft, Portland, OR. This exhibition explores how contemporary artists embrace a cross-disciplinary approach to art making wherein the legacies of art, craft and design merge in work that expands and explores the tactile, conceptual, imaginary, material and critical potential of cultural production.

EAST COAST

Against the Grain: Wood in Contemporary Art, Craft and Design Until September 15, 2013, at the Museum of Art and Design, NYC. This show explores some of the most cutting edge conceptual and technical trends in woodworking today. The exhibition emphasizes the way artists, designers and craftspeople have incorporated postmodernist approaches and strategies into woodworking.

Craftboston Spring Show April 19-21, 2013, at Seaport World Trade Center, Boston, MA. Craftboston Spring is a highly regarded, must-attend event for artists, collectors and craft enthusiasts, featuring work by emerging artists from leading schools and universities.

High Point Market April 20-25, 2013, High Point, NC. The largest furnishings industry trade show in the world, bringing more than 75,000 people to High Point every six months. Most serious retail home furnishings buyers can be found in High Point twice a year because if you can’t find it in High Point…it probably doesn’t exist.

Smithsonian Craft Show April 25-28, 2013, at The National Building Museum, Washington D.C. Juried show and sale of fine American craft, produced by the Smithsonian Women’s Committee to support education, outreach and research at the Smithsonian.

Across the Grain: Turned and Carved Wood April 7-September 22, 2013, at Fuller Craft Museum, MA. Featuring the work of woodturning pioneers such as Bob Stocksdale, Rude Osolnik and David Ellsworth—all of whom are responsible for the inclusion of turned wood masterpieces in gallery collections around the world.

MIDWEST

American Craft Council Show: St. Paul April 19, 2013, at St. Paul RiverCentre, St. Paul, MN. More than 200 of the country’s best contemporary jewelry, clothing, furniture and home décor artists gather in one spot to present a spectacular season of fine quality craft. This is the Council’s only Midwest show—a must-attend for craft lovers!

SOUTH

Reminiscential April 5-May 26, 2013, at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, TX. This exhibition investigates the topics of memory and remembrance through distinctive works that pay homage to the rich history of memento mori objects and Victorian sentimental jewelry.

EUROPE

UK

Kaffe Fassett: A Life in Color March 22-June 29, 2013, at the Fashion and Textile Museum, London. A celebration of the work of one of the great practitioners of contemporary craft. Exhibition highlights include extravagantly-coloured 9-foot-wide knitted shawls, coats and throws and patchwork fabrics shown in a glorious selection of quilts.

Ceramic Art London April 12-14, 2013, at The Royal College of Art, London. The leading fair for contemporary ceramics, Ceramic Art London provides a unique showcase of national and international ceramic artists.

Crafter: Makers of the Exceptional April 4-6, 2013, at Somerset House, London. This collection of works by talented and pioneering artisans demonstrates their expert craftsmanship and brings the entire creative process to life, from rare raw material to valuable finished work.

GERMANY

Full Booked: Ink on Paper March 14-April 21, 2013, at Gestalten Space, Sophie-Gips-Höfe, Sophienstraße 21, 10178 Berlin. An international group show featuring hundreds of innovative books and other print products, further proving that print publications are not dead, but rather on the verge of an exciting new era.

ITALY

Milan Furniture Fair April 9-14, 2013, at Milan Fairgrounds, Rho, Milan. Considered a leading venue for the display of new products by designers of furniture, lighting and other home furnishings, the Milano Salone showcases the latest in furniture and design from countries around the world.
