There are many things we have in abundance in the good old USA, but a plethora of high quality design shows is not one of them.
There are crafty shows. There are glossy mega shows. There are art shows. But something that’s a little more celebratory of indie design of high quality? Not so much.

superPAC comes to Westedge
That’s why I’m liking Westedge in the LA area, and in particular, the exhibit put on by one of my go-to blogs, Design Milk (curated by the lovely Jaime Derringer): SuperPAC takes a look at left coast style—not just California style, but style that runs from Mexico to Canada. This makes perfect sense: the left coast is just different from the heartland and east coasts of the three countries. It touches and is touched by the Pacific: a little easier, a little more eco, always with a dash of both quirkiness and modernist rigor.
And it helps that there is a lot of great work to choose from. As Jaime found, “I was surprised at how much good work comes out of the West Coast. It was much more difficult than I expected to narrow it down.”
We have to agree: we love so many of the makers who are included in the exhibit.
SoCal’s brilliantly represented by 100xbtr, Brendan Ravenhill, modern weaver Mimi Jung, Eric Trine, Tanya Aguiniga, and Wolfum.
Flying the flag for Northern California is our favorite furniture maker, Varian Designs.

Heading north to the talent-rich Portland and Seattle, we have Rachel Denny, Phloem Studio, one of my faves Iacoli & McAllister, graypants, the ultra-talented Ladies & Gentlemen Studio, Standard Socket, and urbancase.

North of the border, we have a trio of ace Canadian talent: Hinterland Design, Jeff Martin Joinery, and Zoe Pawlak.

And south of the border, we have the revelation of PECA in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico. (Why don’t we see more Mexican design in the US? Deeply under-represented and under-appreciated!)
The West Coast may have tech, but it’s fine time we start to get our share of the design spotlight. May SuperPAC and Westedge start to change all that.
Westedge runs October 16-19 2014 at The Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, CA.
