Architecture & The City Festival September 1-30, 2013, San Francisco. The nation’s largest festival of its kind, the Architecture and the City festival showcases the Bay Area’s design talent and provides a forum to promote new ideas for innovative design and development. Whether you’re looking to get involved with the local architecture community or simply want to discover more of the city’s built environment, the festival will offer an unparalleled opportunity to experience San Francisco.

Urban Air Market  September 15, 2013 , 11AM, Octavia/Hayes Street, San Francisco. Inspired by “green” designers who are pushing the direction of fashion where it should be going. Urban Air Market is a curated marketplace for sustainable design featuring 150 independent designers of men’s, women’s, and kid’s clothing, accessories, jewelry, and home décor. Participating designers are selected based on their quality, originality, cleverness, and method of sustainability in design. RSVP to attend, or even apply to be a new designer!

Karen Gilbert Jewelry SkLo: Objects & Lighting Shift September 7- October 27, 2013. Shibumi Gallery presents Fold, a show with Karen Gilbert + SkLO Studio, highlighting the intimate relationship between material and form from the craft and design perspective.

Words I Didn’t Know I Needed: Illustrated Prints by Emily McDowell, Opening Reception, September 6, 2013, Exhibition Runs September 6- October 1, 2013 at Rare Device, San Francisco. After spending nearly a decade working as an advertising art director, writer, and creative director, Emily McDowell quit her full-time agency job at the beginning of 2011 to start making things that weren’t ads. At the time, she had no idea what those things would be. Emily’s work is commercial by intention and designed to be relatable and accessible. She is inspired by the human condition, nature, folk art, geometry, tacos, and the crazy urban landscape of the city she calls home: Los Angeles.

“People in Glass Houses: The Legacy of Joseph Eichler” Documentary Screenings by Realtor and Filmaker Monique Lombardelli, September 12 + 19 6-8pm, at Design Within Reach Palo Alto + Berkeley. The first ever documentary film (running time: 45 minutes) to explore the unique phenomenon that Mid-Century Modern developer, Joseph Eichler, created in the late 50s and 60s. With over 11,000 homes built in California, Joseph Eichler stands as one of the true revolutionary post-war builders to turn the counterculture of the time into what we now know and embrace today as “modern living.” Watch as seven home owners in various Bay Area Eichler neighborhoods speak about the pride of ownership they live with everyday. History, legacy, and passion are all front and center in this fantastic film.

The Oktoberfest Block Party September 21, 2013, 1-6pm, San Francisco. Join Crossroads Nightlife and The Corner Store for an outdoor celebration of craft beer, wine, food, and music. Like Oktoberfest in Germany, the event will showcase the work of nearby brewers, vintners, musicians, and chefs, providing the best the Bay Area has to offer.

Vessel Gallery Artist Talk Series with Christy Kovacs and John Ruszel September 14, 2013, 2-3:30PM, Vessel Gallery, Oakland. Meet artists whose works are included in “The New Bay Bridge” and hear what inspired these artists to take on these new works. Take a tour of the show with the artists and director Lonnie Lee. Refreshments and music performance presented by Classical Revolution will follow.

La Frontera: A Look at the Border Between Mexico and the United States August 14-September 15, 2013, at Velvet Da Vinci, San Francisco. Velvet da Vinci presents La Frontera, an exhibition of contemporary jewelry design that examines the complex relationship between Mexico and the U.S. The artists explore the underlying tensions of the border in their geographic, political, and cultural contexts. Inspired by the tumultuous environment of deserts, mountains, rivers, and the ongoing arrival of diverse nationalities that is so inherently American, the exhibition features 90 artists from the U.S., Mexico, Europe, Australia, and Latin America.

Paul Philp: Shadows September 27- November 2, 2013, at Hedge Gallery, San Francisco. Hedge is delighted to present its next exhibition, Shadows by Welsh potter Paul Philp, featuring 30 works, some of which have been released from the artist’s personal reserve and are being exhibited for the first time. Inspired by a simple life and working in his studio, Philp continues to refine his zen approach to pottery, building elegant vessels that combine clay and impurities to achieve richly textured surfaces.

Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller July 13-September 22, 2013, at Museum of Craft and Design, 2569 Third Street, SF. This exhibition explores the behind-the-scenes process in designing for form and function. Featuring drawings, models, prototypes, photographs, oral histories, and original objects, this collection unveils the problems and innovative solutions that can come from creating art with a purpose.

 

PACIFIC NORTHWEST 

Community Night Out September 5, 2013, at the Seattle Art Museum. Celebrate the creativity and ingenuity of Japanese fashion with an evening full of free live music, art making, My Favorite Things tours, performances, and workshops.

Quality is Contagious, John Economaki and Bridge City Tool Works August 16, 2013- February 8 2014, at the MoCC, Portland, OR. Drawing on his background in industrial design and knowledge of construction needs, John Economaki established Bridge City Tool Works in 1983. Using the most contemporary digital technology, Economaki designs tools to stand the test of time. The company’s products, sketches, and tools from the past thirty years will be on display for the first time.

Object Focus: The Bowl May 16-September 21, 2013, at the MoCC, Portland, OR.  Engage+Use, part two of the two-part exhibit, features contemporary project-based work that investigates the processes of making and using bowls and incorporating them into daily life. Curated by Ayumi Horie.

 

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Never Built: Los Angeles A + D Museum, Los Angeles. An exhibition that explores the LA that could have been, Never Built: Los Angeles looks specifically at the dreams of architects and designers that envisioned a different kind of urban plan. From forgone parks and green space to transportation and a very different LAX, see the abandoned and unfulfilled renderings and blueprints of some of the world’s greatest architects. It’s not all doom and gloom though—you’ll leave feeling hopeful and inspired that great ideas could still transform modern LA.

Meet Your Makers, Santa Barbara, Every Saturday, July 6- September 21, 10am-3pm, Plaza de Vera Cruz Park, Downtown Santa Barbara. Open to the public and free to attend! Meet Your Makers is the place to meet independent makers (artists, artisans, designers, crafters, healthy food producers) and other small creative businesses that engage in sustainable, socially and environmentally responsible practices. California Craft Beer + Food Festival Every Tuesday from August 6 to September 24, 2013, 6-11pm, Cooks County, Los Angeles. Chef/Owner of Cooks County, Daniel Mattern has invited seven of his favorite breweries to come pour their beer selection at the “California Craft Beer and Food Festival,” a series of beer-centric dinners.

Artifacts of A Life Lived By the Living (To Live) September 29, 2013- January 5, 2014, at Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles. Curated by artist Chris Johanson, this exhibition celebrates the meditative ritual and necessity of the creative process. The interdisciplinary exhibition brings together a group of artists who feel that they must create in service of bringing order to their lives. Johanson has assembled a group of artists he admires whose works include drawing, painting, installation, sound, performance, and movement.

 

MIDWEST

Renegade Craft Fair September 7-8, 2013, 11am-7pm each day along Division St. in Wicker Park, Chicago, IL. Head to Chicago for the 10th Annual Renegade Craft Fair! Featuring hundreds of today’s greatest indie makers along with interactive workshops, tasty local food, booze, music, and more. Check out this year’s lineup of talented artists here.

 

EAST COAST

Urban Fabric: Building New York’s Garment District August 5- October 31, 2013, at 1411 Broadway, New York, NY. Once home to the largest concentration of skyscraper factories in the world and more than 100,000 manufacturing jobs, New York’s historic Garment District has changed dramatically in the past 50 years, but remains one of the city’s most authentic neighborhoods. The Skyscraper Museum is presenting a FREE exhibition on the architecture and urban history of the Garment District in a pop-up space at 1411 Broadway. 

Taste Talks September 14-15, 2013. Brooklyn, NY. Experts in dozens of related fields will come together to observe and discuss the latest trends in food and drink, all in America’s most stylish test kitchen: Brooklyn. Taste Talks is a 2-day event that will showcase the culinary cutting edge for a food-obsessed generation through symposiums, workshops and discussions. Front Row: Chinese American Designers April 26-September 29, 11a-m-6pm, Museum of Chinese in America, New York, NY. This exhibition, guest-curated by designer Mary Ping, features the unique visions of seventeen designers (Philip Lim, Anna Sui, Vivienne Tam, and Vera Wang to name a few) amidst a larger narrative of social and cultural forces that accentuated and cultivated this group’s rise. Front Row will feature designer assemblages of signature looks while drawing on personal reflections that speak to unique artistic visions and entrepreneurial paths.

Against the Grain: Wood in Contemporary Art, Craft and Design March 19, 2013–September 15, 2013, The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), New York, NY. Against the Grain is part of MAD’s ongoing “Materials & Process” series, dedicated to exploring contemporary innovations in traditional techniques and materials, and highlighting the tremendous creative energy and fresh thinking that creators are bringing to woodwork today. The exhibition features 57 artists and designers from around the world.

Interwoven Globe: The Worldwide Textile Trade September 16, 2013–January 5, 2014, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This exhibition looks at fabric design from a global perspective and attempts to tell a story of global trade through three centuries of fabric.

Flea Marqueta, Sundays, 12–6pm, E. 116th Street & Park Avenue, New York, NY. In its heyday, hundreds of pushcart merchants and vendors sold and traded at La Marqueta, making it the economic and social center for the surrounding community. The once-bustling marketplace is now home to Flea Marqueta, which will feature dozens of stalls for East Harlem retailers, artists, and craftsman in the space under the Metro North tracks at E. 116th St. 

Creative Minds, Disciplined Hands: Selections from the New Hampshire Furniture Masters August 3–October 19, 2013. The Society of Arts and Crafts, 175 Newbury Street, Boston, MA. The exhibition presents the work of ten members of the New Hampshire Furniture Masters (NHFM), a group of artists and artisans dedicated to making handmade furniture of the highest quality. Exhibiting artists include Ted Blachly, Jon Brooks, John Cameron, Timothy Coleman, Garrett Hack, Sam Norris, Richard Oedel, Brian David Reid, William Thomas, and A. Thomas Walsh. Pieces in the exhibition reflect the particular styles and interests of each maker and will range from Early American to Shaker to Contemporary to Art Furniture.

 

EUROPE

The London Design Festival September 14-22, 2013, London, UK. First staged in 2003, the London Design Festival is one of the world’s most important annual design events. The Festival program is made up of over 300 events and exhibitions staged by hundreds of partner organizations across the design spectrum and from around the world.

Richard Rogers RA: Inside Out July 18- October 13, 2013. Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK. Focusing on key projects and using previously unseen archival material, drawings, and personal items, the exhibition explores Richard Rogers’ career, from the influence of his Italian family to his impact on how we experience cities today. Visitors will gain an unprecedented insight into this leader of modern design.
