Northern California
American Craft Council Show August 2-4, 2013, at Fort Mason Center, Festival Pavilion, San Francisco. With more than 230 of the top contemporary jewelry, clothing, furniture and home décor artists from across the country, this show is the largest juried craft show west of the Rockies. The ACC is partnering with 9 interior designers on a unique project called, “Make Room: Where Modern Meets Craft,” you won’t want to miss. Come see pure craft at its finest.
Urban Air Market August 18, 2013, 11AM, Dogpatch: Pier 70/22nd Street, San Francisco. Inspired by “green” designers who are pushing the direction of fashion where it should be going. Urban Air Market is a curated marketplace for sustainable design featuring 150 independent designers of men’s, women’s, and kid’s clothing, accessories, jewelry and home décor. Quality is Contagious, John Economaki and Bridge City Tool Works August 16, 2013- February 8 2014, at the MoCC, Portland, OR. Drawing on his background in industrial design and knowledge of construction needs, John Economaki established Bridge City Tool Works in 1983. Using the most contemporary digital technology, Economaki designs tools to stand the test of time. The company’s products, sketches, and tools from the past thirty years will be on view for the first time.
Object Focus: The Bowl May 16-September 21, 2013, at the MoCC, Portland, OR. Engage+Use, part 2 of the two part exhibit, features contemporary project-based work that investigates the processes of making, using, and living with bowls. Curated by Ayumi Horie.

Against the Grain: Wood in Contemporary Art, Craft and Design March 19, 2013 – September 15, 2013, The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), Against the Grain is part of MAD’s ongoing “Materials & Process” series, dedicated to exploring contemporary innovations in traditional techniques and materials, and highlights the tremendous creative energy and fresh thinking that creators are bringing to wood today. The exhibition features 57 artists and designers from around the world.
Punk: Chaos to Couture May 9-August 15, 2013. The Met’s spring 2013 Costume Institute exhibition examines punk’s impact on high fashion from the movement’s birth in the early 1970s through its continuing influence today. Don’t miss out! Super Duper Market August 2 to August 4, 11am-4pm, 268 Mulberry Street, New York, NY. The annual Super(Duper)Market is back and ready to celebrate the best artisanal food-makers from across the country. The three-day pop-up super-store will feature some of PAPER’s favorite East Coast, West Coast and between-coast food vendors selling their super-delicious products. Expect to leave with a lot of locally-sourced, handmade goodies and a full belly.
Flea Marqueta, Sundays, 12-6pm, 116th & Park, New York, NY. In its heyday, hundreds of pushcart merchants and vendors sold and traded at La Marqueta, making it the community’s economic and social center. The once-bustling marketplace is now home to Flea Marqueta, which will feature dozens of stalls for East Harlem retailers, artists, and craftsman in the space under the Metro North tracks at E. 116th St.

Richard Rogers RA: Inside Out July 18- October 13, 2013. Royal Academy of Arts, London. Focusing on key projects and using previously unseen archival material, drawings and personal items the exhibition explores Richard Rogers’ career, from the influence of his Italian family to his impact on how we experience cities today. Visitors will gain an unprecedented insight into this leader of modern design.

Notting Hill Carnival August 26-27, 2013. Held each August Bank Holiday since 1966, the Notting Hill Carnival is the largest festival celebration of its kind in Europe. Starting its life as a local festival set up by the West Indian community of the Notting Hill area, it has now become a full-blooded Caribbean carnival, attracting millions of visitors from all over the globe.
