JULY

It’s hot hot hot outside, and as much as we love lounging poolside with HOS magazine and a cocktail in hand, it’s nice to duck indoors and feel that cool AC every so often. And when you do, why not also refresh your creative side by exploring these exciting art and design events.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

TOUCH July 10-August 11, 2013, at Campfire Gallery, 3344 24th St, SF. A group show featuring artists David Fiveash, Emily Silver and Hadley Williams. Delving deeply into their own unique medium, each artist draws upon familiar physical environments and materials, exploring relationships between both objects and space. Artist Reception: July 13, 6-9 pm.

Holy Lane: Carving Allegories June 29-September 15, 2013, at Museum of Craft and Design, 2569 Third Street, SF. The exhibition features 12 elaborately carved and deftly painted works of art that are best described as carved frame-painting hybrids.

Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller July 13-September 22, 2013, at Museum of Craft and Design, 2569 Third Street, SF. This exhibition explores the behind-the-scenes process in designing for form and function. Featuring drawings, models, prototypes, photographs, oral histories and original objects, this collection unveils the problems and innovative solutions in creating art with a purpose.

Etsy Meet & Make: Craft Lab at MCD – Bath Scrubs July 11, 2013, 7-9:30 pm, at Museum of Craft and Design, 2569 Third Street, SF. Join bay area artist Katy Atchison in creating a Bath Scrub Set for yourself or a gift for someone else that’s beautifully wrapped and 100% handmade by you! Admission is $10 or $5 for Museum members.

Palo Alto Glass and Clay Festival July 13-14, 2013, at Palo Alto Art Center. A fabulous, free, fun-filled 2-day celebration of clay and glass art, featuring 175 juried artists displaying their work.

Renegade Craft Fair July 27-28, 2013, at Fort Mason Center, SF. A curated selection of over 250 indie crafters, with DIY inspiration lounge by Toyota, make-and-take workshop by Bernina + Kollabora, color installation by Vera Chroma, savory food by Tante’s + The Missing Link + The Lunchpad SF, and coffee by Fourbarrel Coffee.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Renegade Craft Fair July 20-21, 2013, at Los Angeles State Historic Park, 1245 N. Spring St. A curated selection of over 250 indie crafters, with workshops by Workshops by Bernina + Kollabora, music by KXLU, photobooth by Magnolia Photobooth Co, and savory + sweet treats by some of LA’s finest food trucks.

Pasadena Bead and Design Show July 25-28, 2013, at the Hilton, Pasadena. California’s original bead and design event. The show features 300 artisan booths, galleries, and merchant displays, all in one place.

EAST COAST

Secrets & Surprises: Jewelry to Treasure & Enchant July 19-21, 2013, at the Society for Contemporary Craft, Pittsburgh, PA. A three day workshop with Dauvit Alexander, who works with manufactured and found boxes to create jewelry. Intermediate-level jewelry makers will use press forming, scoring, folding and other techniques to fashion lockets, box rings and small boxes.

Koloman Moser: Designing a Modern Vienna 1897-1907 May 23-Septmeber 2, 2013, at  the Neue Galerie New York. A monographic exhibition devoted to the Austrian artist, designer, and Wiener Werkstätte co-founder Koloman Moser. This show surveys the sum of Moser’s decorative arts career, comprising important interior design commissions, examples of graphic design, furniture, textiles, jewelry, metalwork, glass, and ceramics.

Geometric Metal with Erin S. Daily July 9-August 6, 2013, at Brooklyn Metal Works, NY. A five session class exploring how lightweight volumes can be attained through thin gauged sheet metal. Class will include paper modeling, scoring, bending, and patterning to create jewlery with crisp structure and surface interest. Open to all levels.

Masterworks July 5-Septmeber 8, 2013 at Wexler Gallery, Philadelphia, PA. A historic exhibition of museum quality pieces by master glass artists from around the globe, including Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtova, Mark Peiser, and Marvin Lipofsky.

UK

Designers Makers Market July 20, 2013, at Old Spitalfields Market, London. Held the third Saturday of every month until December, this market showcases more than 40 of the UK’ s most talented designers and makers, highlighting a plethora of craft and design talent, including ceramics, jewelry, textiles, homewares, and print.

Deception: Ceramics and Imitation May 25, 2013-January 5, 2014, at V&A, London. From functional tableware masquerading as fruit or vegetables to imitations of prized materials, potters have always created objects intended to delight and surprise by deceiving the eye. This display will draw on the V&A’s extensive ceramic collections to show some remarkable transformations achieved in ceramics.
